Case Study
Mr X lives alone in a 2 bedroom terraced house. He phoned us after seeing our Home Safety Craftsman’s van on his street. He asked if we could we help with a rail on his step to the rear door.
Our Home Safety Officer called and carried out a home safety check which highlighted the need for a rail to his rear steps, a second rail to his stairs, a smoke detector to the first floor and a referral to the Home Energy Efficiency Scheme for additional loft insulation and draught proofing. The client declined the offer of a Benefits check which is offered to all clients. The work was completed a week later, and the questionnaire was returned with a note of thanks.
Three months later Mr X phoned again, he had suffered a mini stroke, and was unable to manage his kitchen taps.
Our Caseworker visited Mr X, and met the Community Nurse who confirmed that Mr X was struggling to cope at home on his own.
Our Caseworker contacted Social Services who are currently arranging Home Care, and Age Concern who are currently arranging Home Cleaning.
Mr X was happy to discuss his financial circumstances, and it became clear that he was entitled to Pension Credit, Council Tax benefit and was now likely to be eligible for Attendance Allowance due to his health condition.
The Caseworker chased up the HEES grant, and referred Mr X for an Occupational Therapy assessment for bathing, which unfortunately may mean a 6 month wait, but at least Mr X is aware of the likely delay.
